Why Drake Is Calling Out His Father Dennis Graham

According to Drake, his relationship with his father, Dennis Graham, has always been rocky. On songs like “Look What You’ve Done” and “0 to 100,” Drake recalled how his father would abandon him, fail to pay child support, and repeatedly let him down. But Graham is now pushing back against those claims.

When asked about them in a recent interview, Graham said many of his son’s lyrics are false and accused Drake of making them up to sell records, which prompted an emotional reaction from the “In My Feelings” rapper.

A closer look at Graham’s comments about Drake

On Oct. 1, Graham interviewed with Power 106 Los Angeles, where host Nick Cannon asked him about Drake’s upbringing and his apparent absence during those years. In response, Graham claimed that he has “always” been there for his son.

“I have always been with Drake,” Graham said. “I talk to him, if not every day, every other day. We really got into a deep conversation about that. I said, ‘Drake, why are you saying all of this different stuff about me, man? This is not cool.’ And he goes ‘Dad, it sells records.’”

He added, “I exposed him to every aspect of life. I never hid anything from him … I showed him this side of life and showed him that side of life.”

It’s not the first time that Graham has ever said such a thing. When asked about the lyrics in a June episode of A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, Graham also shut them down.

“We had a conversation about that also,” he said. “I said ‘Drake, you gotta stop this man; you know that never happened.’ He goes, ‘Dad, listen man. Just go with the flow. This sh*t sells records.’”

Drake’s response to his dad’s claims
On Oct. 8, Drake took to social media to respond to his father’s claims, writing that anything he ever said about Graham was true.

In a note posted to his Instagram Story, he wrote, “[I] woke up today so hurt man. My father will say anything to anyone that’s willing to listen to him. It’s sad when family gets like this but what can we really do[.] That’s the people we are stuck with…every bar I ever spit was the truth and the truth is hard for some people to accept.”

As of writing, Graham has not responded to his son’s note.

Social media reacts
After catching wind of the drama, many people rushed to Twitter to share their opinions. Some people sided with Drake, with one person noting that there was “no way” Graham could have been fully present, given that he lived in Memphis, Tennessee while Drake stayed with his mother in Canada.

Another person claimed that “All of Drake’s photos with his dad (before the fame) are from when he was very young. Between ages 1-5. His father wasn’t in his life during his pre teen/teenage years. All he had was his mother.”

But others wrote that they believed Graham, with one woman tweeting, “How you appropriate father absenteeism!!!”

Oof. Let’s hope that these two will be able to work out their issues soon.
