The Voice eliminated Joana Martinez and Shane Q instead of Marybeth Byrd, which determined the seventeenth season’s Top 8 artists during Tuesday night’s live results broadcast on NBC.
Shane, a 29-year-old from Sacramento, CA, and Joana, a 15-year-old from Miami, FL, were ousted from The Voice competition instead of Marybeth, an 18-year-old from Armorel, AR, who was the other artist in the bottom three based on home viewer votes cast following Monday night’s Top 10 performance show.
Shane performed on behalf of Kelly Clarkson’s team this season on The Voice, Joana was a member of Gwen Stefani’s team, and Marybeth will continue to represent John Legend’s team going forward on the show.
The Voice coach Blake Shelton’s team left the results show unscathed.
After the three artists each sang a survival song on Tuesday night’s live show, America voted on The Voice official app and NBC.com via the show’s “Instant Save” format to keep Marybeth in the competition.
The seven acts who automatically advanced and will join Marybeth in next week’s live show are Will Breman, a 25-year-old from Santa Barbara, CA; Katie Kadan, a 38-year-old from Chicago, IL; Rose Short, a 34-year-old from Killeen, TX; Ricky Duran, a 29-year-old from Austin, TX; Kat Hammock, an 18-year-old from Encinitas, CA; Hello Sunday, a duo comprised of Myla Finks, a 14-year-old from Atlanta, GA, and Chelsea Glover, a 13-year-old from Atlanta, GA; and Jake Hoot, a 31-year-old from Cookeville, TN.
On Tuesday night, Shane Q kicked off the elimination format by singing “Killing Me Softly With His Song” by Roberta Flack
Blake told Shane his voice is “so unique” and he had “a really great song choice.” Blake was surprised to see Shane in the bottom again, but he admitted the competition continues to get tighter and tighter.
Kelly said she was shocked as well and this is such “a talented season” of The Voice. Kelly complimented Shane for being able to tackle different genres of music, and she thought he had selected a beautiful song for a vocalist.
Joanna then performed “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye on the stage.
Blake said Joanna was still “Team Blake” in his mind and she always gives her performances everything she’s got. He also reminded viewers Joanna is only 16 years old.
Gwen noted how Joanna has blossomed right before America’s eyes and her personality is just starting to come out. Gwen insisted viewers needed to vote for Joanna so they could get to know her even better and see more from her.
And finally, Marybeth took the stage with “You Are the Reason” by Calum Scott, Leona Lewis and Ilse DeLange.
John gushed about how Marybeth is “consistently one of the best singers on this show.” He said she’s “consistently excellent” and gave America some of her best performances this week. John was hoping America would reward Marybeth for that.
Home viewers then had a short five-minute window to vote for one of the three artists to stay on The Voice.
At the end of the final commercial break, the vote was 49% in Marybeth’s favor, compared to 26% of the votes that had poured in for Joana and 24% of the votes that went to Shane.
Before The Voice host Carson Daly announced the results live, Shane told Kelly that she pushes him to his limits and he’s going to take her advice to help him grow.
Joana thanked Gwen for helping her to blossom and become more comfortable on the stage, and Marybeth said working with John has been such a blessing and he had taught her so much.
Carson revealed the final set of results at the end of the night, and Marybeth was instantly saved, sending Shane and Joana home.
