Duchess Meghan Markle wasn’t always a member of the British Royal Family, and it seems like the public and press are intent on never letting her forget it. Though the duchess has done her best to acclimate to the traditions and pressures of being royal — it’s been a truly challenging experience.
Though the former actress doesn’t have a scandalous past by a long shot, her American roots and her mixed-race heritage along with her outspoken feminist rhetoric has made her a target in the British press. Though she appeared to be handling everything with grace, the constant tabloids and her estranged paternal family’s obsession with her has been difficult.
At present, the Suits alum is on a hiatus from her royal duties with her husband, Prince Harry and their son, Archie Harrison. However, from some recent changes the Sussexes have made to their Instagram account, it’s clear that they will be approaching royal life very differently when they return.
Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new royal strategy
Despite the disdain that some Britons have for the Sussexes — they are still extremely popular across the globe. Their hiatus has provided them with the chance to rethink things.
Instead of changing who they are — the duke and duchess will have to find a middle ground, putting the causes nearest and dearest to their hearts front and center, while protecting their personal privacy. Royal commentator Juliet Rieden told Nine News Australia,
I don’t think we can say for sure that they never will renounce their duties. Certainly the Royal Family would not want them to, of course. They are very valuable to the Royal Family, they are wonderful ambassadors. They are very, very popular and they are very engaging when you meet them. I have been watching the Royal Family for a long time now and Harry and Meghan have a very tactile connection with the public. That warmth is something that really benefits the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan just have to find a way to make it work for them. It’s just like with anyone in a new job – you have to find a way to do your best but also make your skills shine.
Both the duke and duchess are extremely smart — this is simply a learning curve they need to get over.
There’s an obsession with Meghan Markle’s pre-royal life
One of the things that the royals are trying to combat is the obsession around their personal lives. Though they let the public in on some small details about their romance, it looks like they are tightening up their privacy in an attempt to protect themselves and to give Archie, as normal of a childhood as possible.
Despite deleting her personal Instagram account and her lifestyle blog, The Tig — images and elements from Markle’s pre-royal life are constantly being leaked. In fact — her high school dance photo from 1997 was just leaked. An Instagram account posted the photo saying, “16-year-old Meghan Markle [poses] with her first boyfriend Luis Segura at a high school Christmas dance in 1997.”
Though most people marveled at the duchess’ ageless looks — the Sussexes are trying to put a stop to things like this from happening.
Royal fans can no longer tag Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Instagram
With 9.9 million followers on their IG account, Sussexroyal — Markle and Prince Harry are quite popular. However, aside from a personal photo here and there, their account is all about their charity work and positivity. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from digging up old personal photos of Markle and tagging her in them.
In an effort to stop that, the Sussexes have halted all tagged photos of themselves on Instagram. It’s fairly unprecedented considering that Duchess Kate Middleton and Prince William allow tagged photos on their account as does the general royal family Instagram.
Still, with all of the abuse that Markle has had to deal with, we say better safe than sorry.
