Even before the wedding bells were ringing, Princess Diana suspected something was amiss with the royal engagement between herself and Prince Charles. She loved Charles and wanted nothing but to please him, but it wasn’t enough, even then. She quickly became aware of her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, something that only deepened as time went on.
Princess Diana tried to conform after getting engaged to Prince Charles

The courtship didn’t last long, and before she knew it, Diana was on her way to planning a royal wedding. Even before the marriage, there were signs of things to come. Charles had no problem ignoring his bride-to-be in favor of his usual leisurely activities.
It was hard for anyone to not get caught up in it all, and Diana was no exception. She tried her best to conform to her new role and do what was expected of her as the future Princess of Wales. At least one royal stepped up to tell Diana the truth about how things would soon become.
The 1 royal who warned Diana of things to come
The warning came from Princess Grace of Monaco, also known to the world as Grace Kelly. She took the time to warn the young Diana of her future with the Prince. The encounter happened at a reception in London at Goldsmiths’ Hall. Grace was at the event, which was a first for Princess Diana as a newly engaged woman.
Andrew Morton, a royal biographer, wrote about the encounter in a portion of his book William and Catherine. Diana was clearly out of her element and chose a dress that was considered risqué.
“She chose a black ball gown with plunging, gravity-defang décolletage, which had commentators wondering if she had exposed more than she should, for a charity gala in the presence of Princess Grace of Monaco, the former Hollywood star Grace Kelly,” Morton wrote.
Princess Diana had a heart to heart with Grace Kelly
At the event, Princess Diana spilled it all to Grace about how she was feeling. She was clearly uneasy considering she had just gotten into it with Charles about her fashion choice for the evening, a black strapless dress.
Grace listened to Princess Diana and assured her with a warning of things to come that it would only get worse. “Don’t worry. It will get a lot worse!” Grace said to Diana.
Things did get worse for Princess Diana
The foreboding words were correct that things would get a lot worse for Princess Diana. She struggled with her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, something Diana could do nothing about. She developed an eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and even tried to commit suicide on multiple occasions.
On one such occasion, Diana threw herself down the stairs while pregnant with Prince William. Luckily, no harm came to herself or to William. The Queen was one of the first people on the scene.
Diana tried to cope with her new reality in destructive ways. Eventually, she was able to get the help she needed and she overcame it all. She used her experiences to become an advocate for the less fortunate and used her celebrity for good.
