From his days as a precocious child to his wild teen years and even during his time in the army, the world has watched Prince Harry go from a boy to a man. However, the past few years of his life have been some of the most transformative for the red-headed prince.
No longer in older brother Prince William’s shadow, the Duke of Sussex has stepped out on his own. He fell in love with Meghan Markle, an American actress with a passion for helping others. He’s become a father to 6-month-old Archie Harrison, and he’s been increasingly outspoken and candid about his personal journey and beliefs.
Though these all seem like positive factors, it appears that Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles, and his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, have never been more worried about him.
Prince Harry has changed significantly since meeting Meghan Markle
We’ve all watched the prince mature since meeting Markle in 2016. Before their blind date, Harry was known as the party prince. From his nude Las Vegas pictures to his Nazi Halloween costume, the prince popped up in the tabloids throughout his 20s for one reason or another.
However, since being with Markle, Prince Harry has turned to yoga and given up cigarettes and alcohol. Apparently this has all been in an effort to keep the duchess happy. In her 2019 biography, Harry: Conversations with the Prince, Angela Levin writes, “Harry has always worn his heart on his sleeve. It’s obvious he loves his wife, but he is also in awe of her. A reason perhaps for him having remarked before the wedding: ‘what Meghan wants Meghan gets.’”
This is why Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth are worried about Prince Harry
Though quitting cigarettes and turning to yoga are healthy choices, the queen and Prince of Wales are nervous Prince Harry is being forced to suppress who he truly is for Markle. Levin writes:
On many occasions, he has also seemed to be a shadow of himself: miserable, tense, sulky and even emasculated. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why, but perhaps all the changes Meghan has encouraged him to adopt have temporarily made him no longer feel quite himself. He also seems to be less active. In 2018 he only fulfilled 193 royal engagements compared to 507 undertaken by Prince Charles. He is emotionally vulnerable and has no wish to contradict a charismatic and extremely determined wife. I have been told from an insider that both the Queen and Prince Charles are very worried about him.
Is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage in trouble?
The royal couple revealed through their ITV documentary, Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, that they are struggling to adjust as modern royals in the spotlight. And the prince seems to be willing to do whatever it takes to make sure his wife is happy. A royal insider told Levin, “[Harry] loved being in the army and has been a classic Jack the Lad. But now he doesn’t want to say the wrong thing in case he upsets Meghan.”
For now, it looks like the pair are going to retreat from the public to strategize on their approach and spend some time with the duchess’s mother in Los Angeles over Thanksgiving.
