Meghan Markle has always been someone who believes in equal opportunities. However, after marrying Prince Harry and becoming the Duchess of Sussex, she now has more of a platform to champion the issues that are important to her. Now, Markle uses her wealth, influence and expertise to effect some serious change. Recently, the new mom wrote a heartfelt letter expressing her passion for making higher education more accessible to people from all different walks of life.
Markle has thrown her support behind a lot of worthy causes, one of which is the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU.) The ACU is a charitable organization that seeks to support excellence in higher education. On November 26, 2019, in honor of World Access to Higher Education Day 2019, Markle penned a letter that maintains that everyone deserves access to higher education regardless of where they come from.

In her letter, the duchess made it known “how important it is for all people, regardless of gender or socioeconomic background, to have the opportunity to access this higher education.” She then went on to share that being given the opportunity to continue one’s education is invaluable for all those who desire it. “The value of this cannot be understated. Because education expands mindsets, and those minds can then expand the scope of the world at large. From a micro to a macro level, it is with education that we see great change,” Markle wrote.

The former actress then shared a personal anecdote from her own life. Speaking about her travels to Africa, she spoke about a young, Kenyan, man who had a hunger for continuing his education. “Earlier this year I met Simon Kiongo from Kenya, who grew up on a small family farm, and traded vegetables as a means of covering tuition costs. It struck me as such a prime example of how so many around the world yearn for education and do whatever they can to afford themselves that opportunity,” the Duchess added, reflecting on her experience.
How the ACU is helping those in needs
She then went on share the vital work that Kiongo was doing with the aid of the ACU and expressed her hope that more deserving people would one day have the opportunity to further their education. “Now, with support from the ACU, he is doing remarkable cancer research for his country, specifically looking at fertilizers in the food supply and the carcinogenic links that has on community health. Simon is higher education in action,” Markle shared.
Finally, the Duchess of Sussex added that she was proud to be a supporter of an organization that championed such a phenomenal cause. She expressed continued interest to helping deserving people find ways to access education despite socioeconomic background. “I am proud to be patron of the ACU and all that it stands for, as we champion those seeking a higher education and commit to making this world a better place – together,” Markle added. It’s great that the duchess has aligned herself with such an important cause. We’re sure with her support, the ACU will receive even more visibility.
