Married at First Sight star Amber Bowles says she has massive regrets for staying in her marriage to husband Matthew Gwynne.
During Wednesday night’s episode of Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, Amber viewed a Season 9 clip in which her best friend Raven informed her the night before “Decision Day” he had previously spotted Matt out at a bar with another woman.
Amber bawled her eyes out upon learning that news, especially upon hearing Matt had been “very focused” on this mystery woman at the bar, and Amber broke down into tears watching it back again on Unfiltered.
“I just don’t understand why he would treat other humans like that,” Amber cried.
“I desperately wish I would have walked away when he didn’t come home the first time.”
A month into the Married at First Sight process, Matt spent a total of three nights away from his shared apartment with Amber, and he apparently never called or checked in with Amber first.
The very first time Matt disappeared for 24 hours, Amber stayed up all night crying and was so distraught that she had to call into work sick the next day.
Amber felt unwanted, unloved and unappreciated at the time, and to make matters worse, she had found Matt’s wedding ring in the drawer of his nightstand next to their bed.
When Matt finally returned home, Amber accepted a simple apology from her husband, who also claimed he had taken his ring off to exercise and had just forgotten to put it back on.
“Like, my gut told me he was cheating this whole time,” Amber said on Unfiltered, “and it just sucks that I heard this almost too late.”
Unfiltered host Jamie Otis, however, gave Matt the benefit of the doubt by suggesting that although Matt had been spotted leaving a bar with another woman, maybe that doesn’t necessarily mean he was physically cheating.
“You don’t leave a bar at two in the morning with a girl [just to be] by yourself,” Amber said.
And that’s when Amber’s Married at First Sight co-star Elizabeth Bice chimed in.
“The point is, Raven saw it and he said they were very engaged with each other,” Elizabeth argued.
“Whether the P and the V went together or whether he engaged with another female, it still is not justified what he did at that bar and it’s not right.”
Amber then shouted out, “And why the f-ck was he not home with me?!”
“Exactly,” Elizabeth replied. “Why wasn’t Amber out with him?”
Amber was clearly saddened her marriage had taken this course, telling Jamie that all she had wanted was just for Matt to put effort and care into their relationship.
“I just wanted that same energy he was showing that woman. [That’s] all the energy I wanted,” Amber vented.
Not only did Amber choose to stay with Matt in the marriage after he had ditched her for 24 hours, but she also had an out when each couple was given the opportunity to continue or leave their marriages on “Recommitment Day.”
Amber was hesitant at the time to give Matt another chance, but she ultimately did.
However, Amber asked for a divorce from Matt on Married at First Sight’s “Decision Day,” which just aired Wednesday night on Lifetime. Matt agreed divorce was the best option for both of them.
In addition to Amber and Matt, one other couple got divorced on “Decision Day”: Iris Caldwell and Keith Manley.
Two couples, however — Elizabeth and Jamie Thompson as well as Deonna McNeill and Gregory Okotie — chose to stay together.
The Season 9 reunion special for Married at First Sight is set to air next week on Wednesday, September 18 on Lifetime and feature updates on the current status of each relationship.
