Game of Thrones may be over, but that hasn’t stopped fans from obsessing about the show’s most shocking moments. There have been many instances in the series that have left fans reeling from shock. Below are some of the most shocking moments the show has ever brought to our television screens.
Bran is pushed out the window by Jamie Lannister
In a twist of fate, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) sees Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) in a compromising situation. Jamie pushes Bran out the window and he falls to the ground. Eventually, he recovers from his injuries, but the shocking event changed everything for the Stark family. Bran is left unable to move his legs and it helps propel him to his destiny.
Ned Stark is killed
The assassination of Lord Eddard Stark (Sean Bean) is just the beginning of the brutality inflicted towards the Starks before it’s all said and done. After the death of Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), his cruel and evil “son” Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), is placed on the Iron Throne and calls for Ned’s demise.
“My mother wishes me to let Lord Eddard join the Night’s Watch… stripped of all titles and powers, he would serve the realm in permanent exile. And my Lady Sansa has begged mercy for her father. But they have the soft hearts of women… so long as I’m your King treason shall never go unpunished! Ser Ilyn, bring me his head,” King Joffrey demands. Ned is killed and his head cut off in front of both of his daughters.
The Red Wedding
Arguably the most shocking moment on the series came in the form of the Red Wedding. The massacre forever changed the course of the show and the face of the Stark family as we know it. It took place during the War of the Five Kings. It was arranged by Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley) along with help from the Lannisters. It was done in revenge for King Robb Stark’s snub at marrying Lord Frey’s daughter. He instead married Queen Talisa (Oona Chaplin), who was pregnant at the time of the slaughter. Robb (Richard Madden), Talisa, and Lady Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) are slaughtered along with most of their bannermen. Even Robb’s direwolf is killed in the ruthless attack.
King Joffrey dies at the Purple Wedding
In the ultimate justice, Joffrey is poisoned at his wedding and dies in a most heinous death. In what was known as the Purple Wedding, Lady Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg) and Lord Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen) orchestrated the event. Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Joffrey’s uncle, is then arrested for the murder and suspected of having Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) as an accomplice.
Olenna finally reveals the truth of the matter to Jamie, who is Joffrey’s real father, as she herself is forced to die. “I’d hate to die like your son – clawing at my neck, foam and bile spilling from my mouth, eyes blood red, skin purple. Must have been horrible for you, as a Kingsguard, as a father. It was horrible enough for me. A shocking scene. Not at all what I intended. You see, I’d never seen the poison work before,” Olenna tells Jamie before she dies.
Arya’s revenge on Walder Frey
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) has her revenge on Walder Frey in the most unexpected way. Walder is fed a special pie by Arya in full disguise as a serving girl. She reveals to him that his sons are indeed with him, in the pie itself. She motions to the pie, and Walder peels the crust back to see a human finger in the dish. She explains to him that his sons weren’t easy to carve up. She reveals her true identity and removes the face she was wearing.
“They weren’t easy to carve, especially Black Walder,” Arya explains to him. “My name is Arya Stark. I want you to know that. The last thing you’re ever going to see is a Stark smiling down at you as you die.” She cuts his throat and keeps her promise to smile as she does it.
Jon Snow is murdered by members of The Night’s Watch
In one of the most shocking deaths of the entire series, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is killed by members of The Night’s Watch. The Lord Commander, doing his best to save the Wildlings from the impending march of the army of the dead, is killed for bringing them south of the Wall. But this wasn’t the end of Jon Snow. Melisandre (Carice van Houten) brings him back to life and he leaves the Wall after having the men who murdered him killed, including young Olly (Brenock O’Connor).
The death of Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), believed by many to be the rightful Queen of the Iron Throne, is killed by her nephew and love, Jon Snow. The shocking death came at the end of the series when she finally gets everything she has longed dreamed would be hers. But not before she loses her way entirely and burns hundreds of thousands in King’s Landing. Jon, fearful for what the future would bring and at the urging of Tyrion, kills her in the shocking moment.
These are just some of the most shocking and memorable moments that came from Game of Thrones. The ending of the series is like an end to an era and the characters that fans have come to know and love will always be cherished.
