Empire is returning for a final season. One of the stars, Jussie Smollett, was at the center of a scandal after claiming he was a victim of a hate crime then accused of staging the attack.
Smollett won’t be returning for the final season. What will happen to his character? Here is what will happen to Jamal Lyon in season 6.
Jussie Smollett was accused of lying about an attack
Smollett reportedly claimed to be a victim of a hate crime. It was reported that he was attacked by two men around 2 a.m. in Chicago. Also, reports claimed they beat him up, put a noose around his neck, poured an unknown substance on him.
He was later accused of hiring the two men to assault him. One of the men was an extra on the show, and the other was Smollett’s personal trainer. Smollett was indicted for filing a false police report, but prosecutors dropped all 16 counts.
The actor’s PR team recently gave a statement saying “every iota of information … Smollett has stated has been fully corroborated,” according to ABC 7. Former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb will be investigating Smollett.
Smollett won’t be returning to Empire
It was unknown for some time how the scandal would affect the show. The Empire cast threw its support behind the actor through an open letter.
“He is honest and above all, he is filled with integrity,” read the letter. “He is also innocent and no longer subject to legal uncertainty with the criminal charges against him having been dropped. We are confident in his lawyer’s assurance that the case was dismissed because it would not have prevailed.”
Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Bryshere Y. Gray, Trai Byers, Gabourey Sidibe, and Nicole Ari Parker signed the letter addressing FOX’s CEO, and the co-creators of Empire.
It was eventually announced whether the actor will be returning to the new season. This happened after there were conflicting reports.
Variety reported that writers were preparing for his return. Creator, Lee Daniels tweeted, “This is not factual. Jussie will NOT be returning to Empire.”
It looks like Jamal will get away from his family’s drama after getting married. Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney revealed to TV Line how he’ll be written out of the show.
“Jamal is taking a sabbatical from the family,” he said. “He doesn’t want to be caught up in Lyon family drama, which is very much in keeping with his point of view last season — that [the family business] should be something that the family moves away from.”
Where does he escape to with his new husband? “Jamal and Kai have decided to stay in London,” said Mahoney.
This is after the show made history by having the first Black gay wedding on TV. Smollett previously teased the moment.
“It’s something that I’ve been pushing for for the last four seasons,” Smollett told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I knew that we had to go through all of the things that we went through with the character in order to get to the place that we are now.”
