Counting On stars Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth recently faced some fan criticism after they posted a pic that showcased their love and the strength of their relationship. It’s clear that no matter what the members of this family do, they will face backlash. And this time, the outrage was over how the couple holds hands.
“Like potatoes, not like french fries”
The parents of Gideon Martyn Forsyth posted a photo on Instagram that simply featured the couple holding hands, and Joy-Anna added the caption, “🎶’The spaces between my fingers are right where your’s fit perfectly’🎶 [manly hands] [just hold my hand] [my best friend] [Austin Martyn Forsyth].”
However, because Joy-Anna and Austin’s hand-holding technique didn’t include interlocking their fingers, fans cried foul because the image didn’t match the caption. The space between their fingers was irrelevant because they were grasping palms, and fans had to call them out.
“But then you’re holding hands like potatoes not like french fries,” one fan wrote, with another adding, “But like, the space in between your fingers isn’t where your spouse’s are?”
There were plenty of fans who came to Joy-Anna and Austin’s defense. One follower wrote that there is nothing sweeter than holding the hands of a husband who works tirelessly for his family, and another added, “Ignore and pray for those who’ve nothing better to do than hate on hand holding.”
Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth don’t keep fans up-to-date on social media as much as some of her siblings, but every once in a while they do give a sneak peek into their lives. Recently, Joy-Anna gave fans a tour of the RV the young family is living in while they renovate a home to sell.
The 21-year-old revealed that they had been living in the RV for almost a year, and she says it’s a 32-foot long “fifth wheel camper” that’s “pretty cool.” Joy-Anna did admit that there are a few drawbacks to RV living because sometimes she needs a bigger kitchen or more space. But overall, she says it works great and the home is a perfect size for their family.
This isn’t the first time Joy-Anna and Austin have lived in an RV while flipping a house. She said in the Instagram video that they did the same thing last year and “did really well,” so they were excited to be working on another home.
A heartbreaking summer
In the middle of the 2019 Duggar baby boom, Joy-Anna and Austin revealed in early May that they were expecting their second child. But, just a few weeks later they shared the heartbreaking news that Joy-Anna had suffered a miscarriage.
The couple told their Instagram fans that when they went to the doctor for their 20-week ultrasound and gender reveal in late June, they couldn’t find a heartbeat or see any movement.
“It was a baby girl,” wrote Joy-Anna. “Although we don’t understand why, God has given us unexplainable peace and comfort during this very difficult time.”
There is no doubt that Joy-Anna received a ton of love and support from her family during the difficult time. And, according to In Touch Weekly, her big sister Jana even treated her to a girls day filled with lunch, nails, coffee, and shopping.
Joy-Anna posted a series of pics of the duo getting pedicures, and she thanked her big sister for spoiling her. She also gave a shout out to her sister-in-law Anna for taking care of baby Gideon.
“Aww, Joy! You’re too kind. I love you so much! 😘❤️” replied Jana.
New episodes of Counting On featuring Joy-Anna Duggar, Austin Forsyth, and Gideon will return to TLC in October.

Today marks one week since we heard these words… . “So this is your baby’s heart (pointing to the ultrasound screen). I don’t hear a heartbeat or see any movement.” . We had gone in for our 20-week ultrasound and gender reveal. It was a baby girl. Although we don’t understand why, God has given us unexplainable peace and comfort during this very difficult time. Yes, it still hurts and we have cried countless tears, but we know that we can trust the Lord. In the words of King David after the loss of his baby, “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me” (2 Sam 12:23). We don’t grieve as those who have no hope because we trust that we will see this little one again. We named her Annabell Elise. Annabell means “God has favored me”, and Elise means “God satisfies”. What a precious thing to know that when our daughter opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was the face of Jesus. Please pray for continued healing, not only physically but for our hearts as well. . “All the way my Savior leads me; What have I to ask beside? Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who through life has been my Guide? Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell! For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well, For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.” -Fanny Crosby
